Purport 一词源自古法语 porport （内容、大意），15世纪初进入英语后主要用作正式名词表示“主要意思、大意、主旨”，即文字材料或口语表达想要传达或传授的中心思想，强调指作者或说话者的实质意图，比如：
- 我没有把信读完，但我想这封信的大意是说他至少一年不回来。我老早就知道他从未偏离自己最初的计划。
I didn't read it all but I think the purport of the letter was that he will not be returning for at least a year. I knew quite early on that he never deviated from his original plan.
这个概念自16世纪20年代起衍生出动词含义，除了自然表示文件、演说等“意指、说明、表明”外，更发展为一个正式的贬义词表示“自称、标榜”，强调事实可能并非如此或者说并不令人轻易信服，比如：
