a far [long] cry from 意为“与……大不相同”、“与……差异很大”。若a far [long] cry后接的不是from而是to,则是“遥远的路途[距离]”。
[译] 她从童年起就养成了读文学作品的习惯。
[误] She has formed the habit of reading literature books since childhood.
a ball of fire(美国俚语)意为“精力旺盛、才气焕发的人”。
[译] 我们唯有破釜沉舟拼搏到底才有出路。
[误] It is the only outlet for us to burn our boats and fight it to the end.
虽然一打(a dozen)=12个,但a baker's dozen是引自一个典故的习语,意为“13”。
[译] 我的职责是做家务和把孩子从学校接回来。
[误] My obligations include doing the housework and picking up the children from school.
本例的“不定冠词+序数词”意为“在原来的基础上又一次(another)”。a fourth time说明作者之前已经修改过三次,而不是“四分之一”。
[译] 警方对公众的合作表示感激。
[误] The police were grateful to the public for their collaboration.
A-1,也作A1(形容词,口语),意为“头等的”、“一流的”、“极好的”、“最优秀的”。
short list意为“决选名单”。short-list则是及物动词,意为“把某人列入决选名单上”。
[译] 她久病不治而亡。
[误] She died after a long disease.
