Hull 一词与小站（微信公众号：田间小站）去年推送的 lull 十分形似，源自古英语 hulu （豆荚、果壳），其基本含义即指种子、果实、谷粒的“外壳、皮”，包括“豆荚”和草莓等浆果的“花萼”等。
用作动词时， hull 自然用来表示“剥去豌豆、大豆等的外壳”以及“摘掉草莓等浆果的花萼”等，比如：
- 发生日全食前，我们坐在宁静的花园里摘除草莓蒂。

由于船体及龙骨与剥开的豌豆豆荚形似，所以到了16世纪中期后， hull 就被引申表示现在的主要含义指“船体、船身”，即船舶的主体，包括船的船底板、船侧板和甲板，但不包括桅杆、上层建筑、索具、发动机及其他配件。
