深入解读

Resounding 这个单词虽然比较长,其实很好记,就是动词 resound (回响;回荡着)的现在分词而已。因此,其本义便是指声音“回声的、回响的、发出回声的、激起共鸣的”或者说“响亮的、洪亮的、嘹亮的”,即声音的响度或饱满度大到足以引起回声,比如:

  • 那个冒牌医生狠狠掴了他一巴掌,声音响亮干脆。
    There was a resounding slap as the bogus doctor struck him violently across the face.

从这个概念出发,等了17世纪30年代后, resounding 开始引申指“彻底的、完全的、轰动的、惊人的、巨大的、令人瞩目的”,仅用在名词前,主要用来强调事物之好或坏十分突出,像能够引起回声的响亮声音那般非常明确、毫无疑问,比如:
