Barter 一词源自古法语 barater （以物易物、讨价还价、欺骗），15世纪中期进入英语后也是用来表示“以物易物”，常用搭配 barter sth for sth 或 barter with sb for sth ，主要指在不使用金钱的情况下用商品、服务、劳务等交换其他商品、服务、劳务等，比如：

• 他们一直用小麦交换棉花和木材。
  They have been bartering wheat for cotton and lumber.
