深入解读

Confide 是一个与熟词 confidence 同源的单词，都源自于拉丁语 confidere （信任、相信、坚定地依靠）。

其中 confide 于15世纪中期直接由拉丁语 confidere 进入英语后，也是用来表示“信任、信赖”，比如：

• 你可以自信有能力而不引以自负。
  You can confide in your own abilities without being conceited.

等到了1735年后， confide 开始发展出现在的主要含义指向某人“透露、吐露”秘密、隐私等，即告诉某人一个秘密或一件私事，同时相信他们不会复述给其他人，比如：

• 那个傻乎乎的年轻人向他最要好的朋友倾吐了自己所有的秘密。
  The naive young man confided all his secrets to his best friend.

而于1888年开始出现的短语动词 confide in sb 则进一步用来表示向认为可信赖的人“透露、吐露、倾诉”，也就是因足够信任某人而向该人分享自己的秘密、隐私、情感等，比如：

• 她人很好，可我还是觉得我不能对她推心置腹。
  She's nice, but I don't feel I can confide in her.

通常在足够信赖的基础上，除了会吐露秘密、隐私外，人们还会“托付、委托”，这也可以用 confide 引申表示，主要指完全信赖和确保地委托他人照顾、保护或负责，比如：

• 把孩子托给邻居照顾
  confide one's child to a neighbour's care
