part、piece、section、division、portion、fraction、fragment、segment与share这些名词均可表示“整体的一部分”之意。

part : 含义广，最普通用词。常指整体中可大可小的一部分，也可指整体中可分开的独立部分。

• We spent part of the time in the museum.
  我们花了一部分时间在博物馆。
• Part of the building was destroyed in the fire.
  大楼的一部分毁于火灾。

piece : 指整体中的一些个体，尤指从某个整体上分出来的一部分。

• She wrote something on a small piece of paper.
  她在一小片纸上写了点什么。

• a piece of cake/cheese/meat
  一块蛋糕 / 奶酪 / 肉

section : 指整体中的分区，部分与部分之间有显著界限。

• The shed comes in sections that you assemble yourself.
  棚房以散件出售，需要自己组装。

division : 通常指按类划分或分割成而的部分。常含抽象意义。

  时间和资源的合理分配

  把人口分成不同的年龄组

portion : 侧重从整体中所分配到的那一部分，含一定的独立意义。

• Only a small portion of the budget is spent on books.
  购书只占预算的一小部分。
• The central portion of the bridge collapsed.
  桥的中段坍塌了。

fraction : 指包含在全体中的一部分，暗示微不足道的一部分。

• Only a small fraction of a bank's total deposits will be withdrawn at any one time.
  任何时候，一家银行的总存款只有少量会被提取。
• She hesitated for the merest fraction of a second.
  她略微犹豫了一下。

fragment : 指因破裂、分割等产生的支离破碎、不规则的一部分。

• Police found fragments of glass near the scene.

• The shattered vase lay in fragments on the floor.
  打碎的花瓶在地上成了一堆碎片。
• I overheard a fragment of their conversation.

segment : 指某物的特定部分或自然形成的部分，也指线形物品的一段。

• She cleaned a small segment of the painting.
  她擦干净了这幅画的一小部分。
• Lines divided the area into segments.
  这一地区用线条分成了若干部分。

share : 指共有的东西中应占有的一部分。

• How much was your share of the winnings?
  在赢的钱里你那份有多少？
• Next year we hope to have a bigger share of the market.
  明年我们希望获得更大的市场份额。
