(1) arise意为“开始(begin)，出现(appear)；呈现(come to one's notice)”，最常用在以抽象名词作主语的场合。
- I'm afraid a difficulty has arisen in the construction of the railway.
恐怕是铁路建设中出现了一个困难。 - Then a discussion arose about the best way to pay.
后来，就付款的最佳方式进行了讨论。 - The question then arises , what manner of men and women are we to describe in our books?接着就出现一个问题：我们要在书中刻画什么样的男人和女人形象？
(2) ①rise通常表示“升高，上升(get higher, come/go up)”，可用于具体事物，也可用于抽象事物(另见“raise...”条)。
- Prices have been kept rising recently.
最近价格一直在上涨。 - What time does the sun rise ?
太阳什么时候升起？
②rise可以表示“起床”，用在非常正式的场合。
- She woke at dawn but didn't rise for another hour.
她黎明时就醒了，但又躺了一个小时。 - Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.
早睡早起使人健康、富有又聪明。
(3) arise和rise均可表示“站起来，起身”，但前者用法较旧，后者使用较多。
- I arose , telling him I would wait for him outside the office.
我站起身，告诉他我将在办公室外面等他。 - The wounded man fell and was too weak to rise.
受伤男子倒下了，他因太虚弱而站不起来。
(4) ①raise为及物动词，表示“举起；使升起；抬高(物价等)；建立(纪念碑等)；提高(嗓门)；扬起、掀起(尘土等)；提出(新论点、问题、异议等)”；还可表示“种植；饲养；养家；抚育(儿女)”等。
