(1) ①tell of意为“告诉(某人)”，等于tell about。
- Have you told him of your intentions?
你把你的意思告诉他了吗？ - Are you telling me of your own father or someone else?
你是打算给我讲你父亲还是其他人？
②tell of有时作“讲述”解，此时tell用作不及物动词。
- I don't like telling of my failures.
我不愿讲述自己的失败。 - The poem tells of the poet's love for his lady.
这首诗表达了诗人对一女子的爱慕之情。
③tell of还可作“告发，揭发”解，如揭发错误、恶作剧等，特别是用于学校孩子中，相当于tell on，这时tell是不及物动词。
- I'll tell of/on you if you don't stop hurting my arm!
如果你再弄疼我的胳膊，我就要去告你！
(2) hear tell of意为“听说”，后接从句时of省略，等于hear sb. talk of，与hear of/about意思相同。
- I hear tell you're going to Europe soon, aren't you?
我听说你很快就要去欧洲了，是吗？ - I've heard tell of strange creatures like that in the sea.
我听说在大海里有像那样的怪物。
(3) ①tell about也指“告诉，讲述”，与tell of可互换。
- Tell me about what you've done at school today.
告诉我你今天在学校里做了什么。
②tell about还可作“告密，告发”解，系非正式用语。
- I'll tell about you stealing the cakes.
我将告发你偷了蛋糕。
(4) inform of/about意为“通知，告知”，比较正式。
- He complained that he had not been informed of/about the decision made at the meeting.
他抱怨说没人告诉他会议做出的这个决定。 - Why didn't you inform me of his arrival?
你为什么不告诉我他来了？
(5) inform against/on意为“告密，告发”，尤指向警察或负责人揭发某人做的坏事。
- The prisoner hoped to gain his own freedom by informing against/on his companions in the jewelry robbery.
这个囚犯希望通过供出珠宝抢劫案中的同伙来获得自由。
(6) notify of意为“通知，通报”，指比较正式地向某人或某机构通报信息，通常用被动式。
- The Health Ministry has to be notified of any infectious diseases in the area.
发生在这个地区的任何传染病都必须上报卫生部。 - Have the police been notified of your being robbed?
你被抢一事正式向警察报案了吗？
(7) notify to意为“(向某人或某机构)通报、通知信息”，是正式用语。
- Any infectious disease must be notified at once to the Health Ministry.
任何传染病都必须立刻上报卫生部。
(8) report to意为“向……报告”，指把有关某事或某人的情况向负责的人或机构通报、报告。
- Remember to report any changes in his temperature to the head nurse.
记住把他体温的任何变化报告给护士长。 - She reported what she had seen to the police.
她把所看到的一切向警察做了报告。 - I will report to the manager what we'll do next.
我将向经理报告下一步的打算。
