Tiramisu
Tiramisu (an Italian word meaning “pick me up”) is a popular coffee-flavored Italian dessert. It is made of ladyfingers dipped in coffee, layered with a whipped mixture of eggs, sugar, and mascarpone cheese, flavored with cocoa. Modern versions have as a rule the addition of whipped cream or whipped egg combined with mascarpone cream, in order to make it lighter, thick and foamy. The cake is usually eaten cold. Over time, replacing some of the ingredients, mainly coffee, there arose numerous variants such as tiramisu with chocolate, amaretto, berry, lemon, strawberry, pineapple, yogurt, banana, raspberry, coconut, and even beer.
Among many stories behind Tiramisu, one is the most romantic. An Italian soldier was leaving for the battleground. His family was so poor that his wife had to use all the bread and biscuits they had to make a dessert for the husband. The dessert was called “Tiramisu”. Whenever the soldier ate this food he would think of his family and his love. “Tiramisu” means “picking me up”. When you enjoy it, you will pick up not only the taste, but also love and happiness. Another popular belief is that the name originates from its inventor, the confectioner Roberto Linguanotto. In honor of his god-daughter's culinary skills he named the today world-famous dessert after her maiden name, Tiramisu.
