The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is the world's oldest national broadcasting organization, established under a Royal Charter. As the largest broadcaster in the world, it has about 23,000 staff. The BBC is a corporation, independent from direct government intervention, with its activities being overseen by the BBC Trust. General management of the organization is in the hands of a Director-General, who is appointed by the Trust; he is the BBC's Editor-in-Chief and chairs the Executive Board.

The operating costs of the World Service, which provides comprehensive TV, radio and online services in Arabic, and Persian and broadcasts in multiple languages, has been funded mainly by direct grants from the British government. These grants were determined independently of the domestic license fee and were usually awarded from the budget of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. However, from 1 April 2014 license fee also funds the BBC World Service.
