抽象名词art 的意义较多，有“艺术、美术、艺术品、文科、学问、人工、技艺、计谋、做作”等。它有单、复形，并有可数和不可数之分。其前可用零冠词、定冠词或不定冠词。现将art 的单、复形的各种意义及用法分别说明如下：
单形art有可数与不可数之分。但多用作不可数名词，其前用零冠词，如：
(1)Art lies in concealing art.
艺术在于无雕琢。
(2)Chinese opera art fascinates the world.
中国戏曲艺术吸引全世界。
(3)Nell is studying art and music.
内尔在学习美术和音乐。
(4)Art is long, life is short.
学海无涯，人生短促。 （格言）
(5)The beauty of these gardens owes more to art than to nature.
这些花园之美赖于人工多于自然。
(6)There is no art in doing that.
做此事并无诀窍。
单形不可数名词 art 具有 “艺术品”或“图片”的意义时则有复念，如：
(7)For the past decade, speculation in primitive art has created a profitable market for American Indian artifacts.
近十年来，原始艺术品的投机生意已产生一个专售美洲印第安人手工艺品的有利可图的市场。

这本故事书有插图吗？
单形art 用作可数名词时，其前常有定冠词或不定冠词，其意义多指艺术、技术等，如：
(9)Writing compositions is an art ; grammar is a science.
作文是一种艺术，语法则是一门科学。
(10)The art is now extinct.
这项技术现已失传。
复形art 亦有可数不可数之分，但大都用作可数名词，其前常用零冠词与定冠词，如：
(11)Differences in cultural levels determine different people's choice of arts .
不同的文化水平决定不同的人对艺术的选择。
(12)She liked painting best of all the arts .
在各种艺术中她最喜欢绘画。
(13)Painting is one of the fine arts .
绘画是美术的一种。 (fine arts 是一固定词组，其前一般须有定冠词the)
(14)He is keen on martial arts .
他喜爱武术。
意谓“文科”和“诡计”时一般必须用复形arts, 如：
(15)History and literature are among the arts .
历史与文学皆属文科。（the arts =the liberal arts, 意谓文科，前须有定冠词 the, 但有例外，如Bachelor of Arts ）
(16)In spite of all his arts , the young girl was not attracted to him.
尽管他耍尽计谋，那个年轻姑娘仍不为他所动。
复形名词 arts 用作不可数的情况较少，下面两例中 arts 不可数都是从句法观点来看的：
(17)She took an arts course at Redmond College.
她在雷德蒙学院选了一门文科课程。
(18)He always gained his ends by arts .
他总是靠耍弄诡计达到其目的。（by arts 是一固定词组）
最后，在理解与运用 art 和arts时，有下列几点值得注意：
1. 单形art 可指“艺术”，亦可指“美术”，应由具体的上下文而定。但a man of art, a school of art 等习语中的art 皆指“美术”。
2. the fine arts （美术）通常只包括绘画、雕刻和建筑。但有时也包括音乐、舞蹈以及诗歌和戏剧。
3. 意谓“技术”的art 有时亦可译为“艺术”，如the photographical art （摄影艺术）， the arts of living （生活的艺术）等。
