有一读者问：常遇到将Close the door behind you, please. 译作“请随手关门”，请问“随手”从何而来？
“随手”纯粹是一种意译。应该是“请将你身后的门关上”。“介词behind+人称代词宾格”的本义是“在……的身后或背后”。在上述句子中的behind you则应该意译为“随手”，再如：
(1)He entered my office and closed the door behind him . （这里的behind him亦应译作“随手”）
但“behind+人称代词宾语格”并不是在任何场合下都可以译作“随手”的，例如下面一些句子中的“behind+代词宾格”就不应译为“随手”：
(2)He went out, leaving the door open behind him .
(3)Adam and Eve wandered forth out of Paradise and the door closed behind them .
但是，话又说回来，下面一句却可在译文中加上“随手”二字：
(4)“Lock it behind me ”, Janeway ordered. He took the suitcase and left.
这个祈使句似乎可译作“我走后你要随手把门锁上”。由此可见，翻译与解释往往并不是一码事。
