Burnish 这个单词一眼看上去往往会误以为是熟词 burn 的衍生词，其实不然，该词最早源自古法语 brun （棕色的、擦亮的），14世纪初进入英语后开始表示“通过摩擦抛光”，发展到今天主要作为一个正式用语表示“磨光、擦亮”金属、皮革等，使之光洁闪亮，比如：
- 玛丽姨妈把一大角的涂了厚厚一层奶油的多脂甜点放在一个擦得铮亮的银盘里。
Auntie Mary put a huge wedge of rich dessert smothered in cream on a burnished plate of beaten silver.
从将氧化变色的金属经过打磨处理恢复原本的光亮色泽这个概念出发， burnish 常被引申指“给……增色或增辉”，多用于形容提高或完善声誉、技能等使其更有吸引力，比如：
