深入解读
Pedigree 一词源自古法语 pied de gru （鹤脚），由于在古代手稿中，血缘关系是用一种分叉的符号来表示，类似于谱系图（genealogical chart）中的家族分支线，而这个符号看起来就像鸟的脚印，于是英语里就用 pedigree 表示“（动物的）纯种系谱”或“（人的）家谱、门第、世系”，一般多用于形容背景显赫或者不俗的家族，比如：
- 饲养员给我们看了这条毛茸茸的狗狗的纯种系谱。
The breeder showed us the furry dog's pedigree. - 他徐缓从容的声音和举止表明他出身贵族。
His languid voice and manner suggested an aristocratic pedigree.
从出身背景这个概念引申用于形容其他事物时，则可以表示“起源、由来”，比如：
- 霸权主义在美国历史上由来已久。
Hegemony has a long pedigree in American history.
在英式英语中，还可以直接将 pedigree 用作形容词，表示“（动物）优良品种的、纯种的”，这在美式英语中则通常使用 pedigreed 表示，比如纯种绵羊（pedigree/pedigreed sheep）。
另外，从 pedigree 的词源不难看出其词根与前不久小站推过的 peddle 的词根相同，都是 ped （脚、足）。而 ped 还是一个同形异义词根，另一个含义则是指“儿童、小孩”，比如小站去年推过的 pedantic 的词根就是如此。
