深入解读

Nominal 一词源自拉丁语 nominalis (与一个名字或多个名字相关的),15世纪中期进入英语后用来表示“与名词相关的”,这个含义现在常用在语法上表示“名词性的、名词的”,比如:名词性形容词(nominal adjective)、多用名词的文体(a nominal style)。

而到了16世纪20年代后, nominal 开始发展出现在的主要含义“名义上的、有名无实的”,多用于形容某个特定的身份、地位或价值、比率、水平等只在名义上存在,但实际上并非如此,比如:

  • 因为他仍未获准经营公司,与他分居的妻子成了名义上的老板。
    As he was still not allowed to run a company, his estranged wife became its nominal head.
  • 她名义上是我们学院的校长——实际工作都是由她的副手来完成的。即便如此,她仍和手下员工关系十分融洽。
    She's the nominal head of our college - the real work is done by her deputy. Even so, she has an excellent rapport with her staff.

而从上面的 nominal damages 这个表达由“名义上的损害赔偿”转换为“象征性的损害赔偿”不难发现, nominal 还可以进一步用来引申表示金额、数额等“微不足道的、象征性的”,多指远小于正常标准、实际价值、实际成本或预期价格等,比如:

  • 该行将倒闭的公司打算以极低的价格出售其盈利较差的业务。
    The moribund company is divesting its less profitable business operations at a nominal price.
  • 他们只象征性地收点费用就可以送货上门。但急剧上升的成本压缩了他们的利润空间。
