Miniature 一词源自意大利语 miniatura （泥金装饰、小图片），16世纪进入英语时指“缩小的图像或任何以大幅度比例缩小的东西”，即今义“微型画、袖珍画像”和“微缩模型、微型复制品”，也可以用来表示“小瓶装烈酒”，比如：
- 埃菲尔铁塔的模型
a miniature of the Eiffel Tower - 该富裕家庭成员的微型人像画
portrait miniatures of the members of the affluent family - 小瓶白兰地
brandy miniatures
进入18世纪后， miniature 开始从名词衍生出形容词含义，指“微型的、小型的、很小的”，比如：
