第一眼看到 advent ，就很容易联想起熟词 adventure （冒险、冒险经历、奇遇）来，两者虽然同词根 ven, vent （来），但意思却相隔不少。
在基督教中，耶稣基督会降临世界两次。第一次是其诞生之时，降生于犹大的伯利恒，目的是为人类赎罪，替世人开了一条又新又活的道路，直通到天父的面前。第二次则是在世界末日之前，目的是彻底消灭撒旦魔鬼的权势，审判万国，使死人复活，大地更新，并引入新天新地，使敬畏耶和华的知识充满全地，如水充满海洋。
为了纪念耶稣基督的降临，在圣诞节前四个星期，从第一个周日到圣诞夜，基督教徒将这段时间称为 “耶稣降临节、将临节（Advent）”，用于筹备庆祝耶稣的降临。
既然 advent 是用来表示“耶稣的降临”，那么很自然地就被引申用来表示重要的或不寻常的人、事件、发明等的“出现、到来、问世”，比如：
