在4个月前推送的 好书推荐 | 一本“补短板”和“强弱项”的单词书 中，小站提到 discrete 与 discreet （谨慎的）容易混淆，要注意区分。除此之外，小站的老铁们看到 discrete 时可能还会想起小站去年推送过的 secrete 来，这两者也有些形近。
具体来说， discrete 一词源自拉丁语 discretus （分离的），14世纪末期进入英语后即用来表示“分离的、互不相连的、各自独立的、不相关联的”，现在多作为一个正式用语或专业术语使用，强调分开的个体各不相同且无联系，而非种类、性质上的差异，或者说它们可能在种类、性质上一致，但个体与个体之间却有着显著差异，且在物理上不连续，比如：
