深入解读

对于看过美剧《都市侠盗》的小伙伴来说， leverage 这个单词应该是相当熟悉了，因为该剧的英文名就叫“Leverage”。不过即使没看过的小伙伴，也会想到该词由 lever （杠杆）+后缀 -age 构成。

Leverage 最早于1724年出现在英语中用来指“杠杆作用”，然后到了1827年开始表示“杠杆力”。现在则作为专业术语不仅表示“杠杆作用、杠杆力”，还可以表示“杠杆系、杠杆机构”以及“杠杆效率”等。

阿基米德曾说过：“给我一个支点，我就能撬起整个地球。”这句话足以说明杠杆作用的威力。而英语里到了1858年后， leverage 便开始用来喻指能够左右他人、操控形势的“影响力、手段、优势、力量”，比如：

  • 她的市长身份使她有能力通过出席委员会会议来达成一些事情。但同时，她很难兼顾政治上的抱负和孩子们的需要。

除了物理意义上的杠杆以外，经常听到的还有金融领域的杠杆。简单说，就是通过融资负债来实现以较小的资本金来控制较大的资产规模，从而扩大盈利能力或购买力。这个概念在美式英语里则是到了1933年开始用 leverage 作名词表示“举债经营、借贷收购、信贷投机”以及“杠杆比率”，对应英式英语里的 gearing ，比如：

  • 通过举债经营的方式，该行将倒闭的公司赚取了一笔可观的利润。
    With leverage, the moribund company made a hefty profit.

用作动词时， leverage 则相应表示“借助已有的……实现新的或更好的目标”以及“举债经营、借贷收购、信贷投机、为……融资”，比如：
