Eloquent 一词源自拉丁语 eloqui （响亮或清楚地说），由前缀 e- （加强）+词根 loqu （说话）+后缀 -ent （具有……性质的、关于……的）构成，14世纪末经古法语 eloquent 进入英语后即用来表示“雄辩的、口才流利的、能言善辩的”，常指人说话流畅有力，以热情动人的语言表达进行强烈的情感刺激，特别是在公共场合中，比如：
- 有口才的人善于用词。
An eloquent speaker is one skilled in the use of words. - 这位书迷说起自己对书的喜爱来就会停不住嘴。
The avid reader was eloquent about his love of books.
除了形容人以外， eloquent 也可以用来形容言辞、文字、表情、动作、图片等“表达生动的、有说服力的、明白显示出的、传神达意的”，即能够生动地或动人地表达或揭示某事，从而有效地说服人，比如：
- 他闪亮的凝视目光传神地表达了他的恳求。
