看到 anguish 一词，小站（微信公众号：田间小站）的老铁们可能不难联想起小站之前推送过的 languish 来。两者虽然形似且含义也有些相近，但词源并不相同。
其中， anguish 一词源自拉丁语 angustia （紧、狭窄、窄小），13世纪经古法语 anguisse, angoisse （窒息感、痛苦、焦虑、愤怒）进入英语后，即用来表示肉体上的“剧痛”或精神上的“极度痛苦、悲痛”，常作正式用语使用，多指一种令人难以忍受或者说折磨得几乎无法承受的且持久的痛苦，比如：
- 悲痛的泪水模糊了她的视线。
Tears of anguish blurred her eyes. - 得知案子的庭审结果，他痛苦欲绝，这是显而易见的。
His anguish at the outcome of the court case was very clear.
到了14世纪中期后， anguish 也开始用作动词表示“感到极度痛苦”和“使极度痛苦”，比如：
