Foe 是一个比较简单好记的三字母单词，也很容易让人联想起 toe （脚趾）、 hoe （锄头）、 joe （人名“乔”）、woe （痛苦；麻烦、问题）等与之结尾相同的单词来。

该词最早出现于12世纪之前，用来表示“对他人怀有个人恩怨的人”。发展到现在， foe 则主要用来指“敌人、仇敌”，常用在诗歌、修辞散文等书面语中，或者作正式用语使用，语气较强，多指敌意很深、危险性很大的对手，往往意味着在战争或斗争方面积极主动， 比如：
