该词源自拉丁语 reminisci （想起、使记起）的现在分词 reminiscentem ，于18世纪初进入英语后， 即用来表示“怀旧的、缅怀往事的、回忆过去的”，常作正式用语仅用在名词前，主要指人或其举止（暗示着）沉浸在回忆之中，通常带着愉悦感，比如：
