该词源自拉丁语 immaculatus （未被玷污的、无污点的），由前缀 im- （不、无）+ 词根 macul （污点）+后缀 -ate （具有……的、有……性质的）构成，15世纪中期进入英语后最初用来喻指“无过失的、清白无辜的”，即在精神或道德方面未被污染或玷污的。

不过现在 immaculate 更多的是用来喻指“无瑕疵的、完美的”，主要用来强调表演、表现、作品、记录、细节等十分完美，没有一丝错误、失误或不好的部分，比如：
