Bizarre 一词源自意大利语 bizarro （易怒的、容易暴跳如雷的），17世纪40年代经法语 bizarre （奇怪的、稀奇古怪的）进入英语后，也是用来表示“古怪的、怪诞的、异乎寻常的”，主要用来形容事物的风格、方式等非常奇怪或不同寻常，常意味着与日常事物对比强烈，或者自身的组合构成明显不协调，以至于引起人们的兴趣或愉悦，比如：
- 她的首张专辑不同寻常地集各种风格于一体。
Her debut album is a bizarre agglomeration of styles. - 晚会很豪华，食物精美可口，香槟酒源源不断。老人们个个瞪大了眼睛，瞧着女孩子们穿的奇装异服。
The evening was a lavish affair with glorious food and an endless supply of champagne. The old people all goggled at the bizarre dresses of the girls.
值得注意的是， bizarre 容易与 bazaar （中东以及印度的“集市”；英美等国的“义卖”）相混淆，在听说读写时要小心区别。
