深入解读
Arid 是一个与常见单词 acrid （辛辣的、难闻的、刺激的）形似且容易混淆的单词。
该词于17世纪中期经法语 aride （干燥的、干旱的）或者直接由拉丁语 aridus （干燥的、干旱的、焦干的）进入英语，也是用来表示土地或气候“干燥的、干旱的、不毛的”，常意味着缺乏或匮乏水分，因而极度干燥或贫瘠以至于无法支撑植被，多用来形容荒地或沙漠之地，比如：
- 能抵抗干旱条件的新品种作物
new strains of crops that can withstand arid conditions - 沙漠中极其干旱，寸草不生。
