Innate 是一个与 inmate （同住者、同狱犯人、同院病人）形似且容易混淆的单词。
该词源自拉丁语 innatus （天生的、天赋的、本能的），15世纪初进入英语后也是用来表示“天生的、天然的、与生俱来的”，与 acquired （习得的、养成的）相对，主要用来形容生命体的既非遗传获得，也非后天习得，但自出生起就存在或拥有的品质、感情、美丽、天资、能力等，比如：
- 知识是后天获得的，不是先天就有的。
Knowledge is acquired, not innate. - 有些孩子似乎天生就有公平感，而另一些孩子似乎天生就是恶霸。
