Weld 是一个与单词 meld （融合、合并、结合）既形似又近义的单词，两者可以一并联想记忆。

该词变体自熟词 well （煮沸、涌上），16世纪90年代出现在英语中后即用来表示“焊接、熔接、锻接”，现在主要指通过吹管、电弧等方法将金属部件表面加热到熔点后流动结合在一起，或者通过挤压、锤击等手段使金属部件结合在一起而无论是否事先加热，常用搭配 weld A and B (together) 或者 weld A (on) to B ，比如：

• 大使馆周围的护栏上都焊上了铁刺尖头。
