谚语 let the devil take the hindmost是each/every man for himself and the devil take the hindmost 缩略后的表达形式，指不管别人，只为争得自身利益。

该谚语初见于由弗朗西斯·博蒙特爵士（Sir Francis Beaumont，1584—1616）和约翰·弗莱契（John Fletcher，1579—1625）所写的戏剧《菲拉斯特》（Philaster，写于约 1610年）中。根据中世纪的迷信说法，要成为魔鬼的门徒必须在西班牙托莱多的一座建筑中受训：其中一项即是沿着地下通道奔跑，落在最后的那个人（the hindmost）就会被魔鬼抓住，成为魔鬼的奴隶。
