词源趣谈 | throw down the gauntlet （向……）挑战

throw down the gauntlet 这一词组中的 gauntlet 与前一条目中的gauntlet 起源不同。

这里的 gauntlet 源自中世纪法语gant（手套），最初指骑士所戴的厚皮手套或钢制手套，作为其盔甲的一部分。（现今的 gauntlet 指带有长袖口的、厚重的防护手套。）

当一名骑士把他的手套扔向另一名骑士时（throw down the gauntlet to another），表明该骑士在向对方挑战。如果被挑战者捡起了手套（pick up the gauntlet），则表明他接受挑战、同意决斗。如今，throw down the gauntlet 及pick up/take up the gauntlet 分别用以比喻“提出挑战”和“接受挑战”之意。
