hoist by one’s own petard 指某人心怀叵测，结果作茧自缚，搬起石头砸自己的脚。
中世纪时，petard 是一种用来破坏敌人城堡大门或城墙的爆炸装置。搁放这种炸药箱极其危险，因为炸药量并不总能控制得好，有时慢燃导火线会提前爆炸。
这时，搁放炸药箱的士兵就会和城墙、大门一同灰飞烟灭——这也就是hoisted （或 raised） by his own petard的字面意思。莎士比亚在其戏剧《哈姆莱特》第3幕第4场中使用了这一成语：
For ’tis the sport to have the engineer
Hoist with his own petar; and it shall go hard
