墨菲定律最早出现在20世纪50年代的文献资料中，但究竟这里的墨菲指的是谁，无人知晓。其他以“墨菲定律”冠名的法则还有：任何事做起来都没有看起来那么简单（Nothing is as easy as it looks）；做任何事，所花的时间都会比你预计的要长（Everything takes longer than you think it will）等等。
