牛顿是力的公制单位，是为了纪念人类历史上最伟大的科学家之一、英国物理学家和数学家艾萨克·牛顿爵士（Sir Isaac Newton，1642—1727）而以其名字命名的。牛顿最著名的科学成就包括发现重力定律和运动定律，以及对微积分和对光的理论的研究。

牛顿同时还是一名议会议员（1689—1690），并于1699至1727年担任皇家造币厂的最高官员，他在职期间推行了货币改革。1703年起牛顿任英国皇家学会（Royal Society）主席，1705年获封骑士称号。牛顿临终前所说的最后一句话是：

“I don't know what I may seem to the world. But as to myselfIseem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.”
“我不知道世界是怎么看我的，但我自己觉得我只是一个在沙滩上玩耍的男孩，想找到一块更光滑的卵石或是更漂亮的贝壳。而真理之海始终在我的面前，待人去发现它。”
