(2) demand from意为“向(某人) 要求(某物)”,是硬性或强行要求某种东西。
- The thieves demanded money from the passengers.
窃贼们向乘客要钱。 - The captain demanded obedience from his men.
船长要求手下人服从他。
(3) demand of是“向(某人) 提出(某种要求);要求(某人) 做(某事)”。
- Hard work will be demanded of students in this course.
要学习这一课程,学生们得刻苦用功。 - The increased population is demanding too much of the electricity supply.
新增的人口对电力提出了过高的要求。 - Is it wrong for the police to demand help of the public in fighting violent crime?
在跟暴力犯罪做斗争时,警察要求公众给予帮助是不对的吗?
(4) expect from/of意为“指望(某人)会做(某事);对……有……期望”。
- Don't expect sudden improvements from/of this class.
不要指望这个班会猛然有进步。 - We all expect great things of you.
我们都对你抱有殷切的期望。
(5) request from/of意为“请求(某人) 做(某事)”,在语气上更接近ask of。
- May I request/ask a favor of you?
我可以请你帮个忙吗? - It's not too much to request of you to wash your own clothes.
自己的衣服自己洗,这对你的要求不算过高。
(6) require of也表示“要求(某人) 做(某事)”,与demand of更接近一些。
- Hard work will be required of students in this course.
要学习这一课程,学生们得刻苦用功。 - The teacher required of the students that they should know all about the battles of their nation's history.
老师要求学生了解自己国家历史上的所有战役。
