(1) wake在四个词中最为普通,意为“醒来(vi.),叫醒(vt.),唤醒(vt.)”,常与up连用。
- Could you wake me (up ) at about five?
你能在5点左右叫醒我吗? - I usually wake (up ) before six in the morning.
我通常在早晨6点前醒来。
(2) wake有规则变化和不规则变化(woke, woken),英式英语中多用后者。waken(规则变化)有时用来代替wake,接直接宾语。
- The prince wakened her with a kiss on her forehead.
王子在她额前的一吻唤醒了她。
(3) ①awake和awaken可表示“认/意识到一种意见、危险等,或开始感到某种情绪”,这时awake多作不及物动词;awaken用作及物动词,表示“使……认/意识到”。这两个词也常用于文学作品中。
- I slowly awoke to the danger that threatened me.
我慢慢意识到我面临的危险了。 - At beginning I paid little attention, but slowly my interest awoke .

④一般说来,awake和awaken在用作引申意义时,awake多用作不及物动词,awaken 多用作及物动词。此外,awake 还可用作表语形容词,awake和asleep较waking和sleeping 更常用。
