(1) 这四个词均可用来表示请求许可，其中can是最常用的一个。

• Can I have a drop more whisky?
  我能再多喝一点威士忌吗？

(2) 用could比用can表示更多的犹豫，没有把握是否将得到允许，或者说话人不想让人听起来太过肯定。

• Could I ask you something, if you are not too busy?
  如果你不太忙的话，我能问你点事吗？

(3) may和might用在较正式的场合，往往含有尊重的意味。might表示更多一些犹豫，但不太常用。

• May I make a suggestion?
  我可以提个建议吗？
• May I stop work a little earlier today?
  我今天可以早点下班吗？
• Might I take the liberty of pointing out that you have made a small mistake?
  我可以冒昧地指出您犯了个小错吗？

(4) 在请求许可时，could和might不是过去时，所有这四个词均指未来。在表示给予许可时，用can和may，而不用could和might，因为could, might含有尊重之意，用于请求许可要比用于给予许可自然。

• A: Could I use your phone?
  我能用用你的电话吗？
  B: Yes, of course, you can .
  (不用could)当然可以。
• A: Might I trouble you for a light?
  我可以麻烦借个火吗？
  B: You may indeed.(不用might)
  完全可以。

(5) 当说及已经给予的许可时，通常不用may。

• It's not fair. Lily can stay up until ten and I have to go to bed at eight.(不用may)
  这不公平，莉莉可以熬到10点，而我8点就得去睡觉。
• Can you park on the pavement in your country?
  在你们国家你可以在人行道上停车吗？

(6) might, could可用在过去时动词之后的间接引语中。

• Mary said that I might (could) borrow her car.
  玛丽说我可以借她的车。

(7) could还可以用来表示过去某人随时被允许做某事(一般性许可)。

• When I lived at home, I could watch TV whenever I wanted to.
  当我在家时，我什么时候想看电视，都可以看。

(8) could不用来表示对过去的一次具体行动的许可，这就像could和was able to之间的差别一样。

• I was allowed to see her yesterday evening. (不用could)
  昨天晚上我被允许去看她。
• He had permission to go out for an hour last night.(不用could)
  昨天夜晚他被允许出去了一个小时。
