区别辨析 only too, all too, but too 与 much/far too

(1) ①only too, all too, but too的意思都是“太……了”，常含有遗憾、惋惜、悲叹的意味。

  • It is only too true that their only son was killed in the terrorist attack.
    他们唯一的儿子在这次恐怖袭击中不幸罹难，很可惜这是事实。
  • The news he brought us proved but too true.
    他给我们带来的消息不幸是事实。
  • The performance was finished all too soon!
    演出结束得太早了！

②only too还可表示“很，非常”之意，等于very。

We shall be only too pleased to help you.
我们将非常高兴帮助你。

 (2) ①much/far too表示“太……”，有“过了头”之意，但有时much仅表示强调。

  • He was at the station far too early.
    他到火车站太早了。
  • You are much too kind to me.
    你对我太好了。

②注意：在too many或too few之前不用much，而要用far。

  • There are far too many people here.
    这儿人太多了。
  • You have given her much/far too little.
    你给她的太少了。
  • These shoes are much too small for me.
    这些鞋对我来说太小了。
  • There are far too many people and far too few seats in the hall.
    大厅里人太多，而座位太少。
