pile, stack 与 heap 这三个词都指把东西堆积起来而形成的“一堆”。

 (1) ①pile意为“一堆，一摞”，通常指把同种类的东西比较整齐地堆起来，是一般性的用语。

• There is a (neat) pile of books on the desk.
  桌上有一堆(整齐的)书本。

②pile 在口语中还表示“大量的钱(large amount of money)”。

• He made a/his pile (or: a pile of money) in the stock market.
  他在证券市场赚了一大笔钱。

③pile 可以组成短语a pile of, piles of ,表示“一堆的，大量的，许多的”。

• I've got a pile of/piles of work to do today.
  我今天有一大堆工作要做。
• He has a pile of good sense.
  他很有判断力。

 (2) ①stack是指将同种类且同样大小的东西整齐地堆在一起。

• There is a stack of dishes to be washed in the kitchen.
  厨房里还有一大堆盘子要洗。
• I've got stacks/piles of work to get through today.
  我今天有一大堆工作要完成。

②stack 可以组成短语a stack of, stacks of表示“一堆的，成堆的，大量的，许多的”。如：a stack of rice straw/books/people/evidence。

 (3) ①heap是指不论种类，杂乱堆放的一“堆”。

• He found a toy electric motor in a junk heap.
  他在废物堆里找到了一台玩具电动机。

②heap 也可以组成 短语a heap of, heaps of ,表示“一堆的，大量的，许多的”。如：a heap of/heaps of money/work/time (时间)/times(次)/trouble/places。
