(1) ①sweep可指“(用刷子、拖布、扫帚等)清扫”。

• I will clean the windows and you, sweep the floor.
  我擦窗户，你拖地板。
• Has the classroom been swept clean?
  教室已打扫干净了吗？
• A: Has the table been cleaned?
  桌子已擦干净了吗？
  B: Yes, I swept the crumbs off it with a cleaning cloth.
  是的，我用抹布把面包屑扫掉了。

②sweep还可表示“像扫地一样放……入；使……进入；吹走；冲倒”等。

• We swept all the guests into the sitting room.
  我们把所有的客人都请进了客厅。
• Tell the cleaner to sweep the dirt out/all the broken glass up.
  告诉清洁工把尘土扫去/打碎的玻璃扫起来。
• Wind swept the leaves about from the sidewalk.
  风把树叶从人行道上向四处吹去。
• She swept the papers into her case and went out.
  她把这些文件统统放入她的箱子内便出去了。

③sweep又作“横扫，席卷，在……蔓延”解。

• The unprecedented wave of strikes and demonstrations that swept (over) the country eventually led to his falling out of power.
  这次席卷全国的史无前例的罢工和示威浪潮最终导致了他的下台。
• The whole country was swept by a wave of anger and indignation at the U.S. bombing of the Chinese embassy in Yugoslavia.
  听到美国轰炸中国驻南斯拉夫使馆的消息，愤怒的浪潮席卷了全国。

 (2) ①mop指“用拖布、毛巾等擦”。

• We usually mop the floor once every two days.
  我们通常每隔一天拖一次地板。
• The weather was so hot that he kept mopping his face with his handkerchief.
  天气太热了，以至于他不停地用手绢擦脸。
• Mop up the water on the floor or somebody may slip.
  擦掉地板上的水，否则有人会滑倒的。

②mop up又作“清剿(敌军)，扫荡”解。

• The battle was won, except for mopping up a few small groups of enemy soldiers who continued to fight.
  战斗胜利了，只剩下清剿几支负隅顽抗的小股敌军了。
• Our troops had already entered that region to undertake some mopping-up operations.
  我们的部队已进驻那个地区去执行清剿残敌的任务。

 (3) ①brush指用“刷子刷或弄平整”。

• Don't leave me to brush the floor after the party.
  聚会后不要留下我来擦地板。
• Your coat needs brushing .
  你的大衣需要刷平一下。
• Your hair is disheveled, give it a brushing .
  你的头发乱蓬蓬的，梳理一下吧。

②brush又作“擦身而过，掠过，轻拂”解。

• The light/gentle wind brushed (against/over) my cheek and I felt relaxed and happy.
  清/柔风轻轻拂过我的面颊，我感到轻松而惬意。

③brush away意为“拂掉”。

• Brush away that insect on/from your head.
  把你头上的小虫拂去。

④brush off可表示“刷掉，掸掉”。

• Brush off the dirt on your coat.
  把你大衣上的尘土掸去。
• She brushes off the dust that has blown on to the shelves.
  她把吹落在架子上的尘土掸去。
• Don't worry: the dirt will brush off easily.
  不要担心：灰尘会很容易掸落。

 (4) dust指“(用掸子等物)掸去灰尘”。

• He dusted the book and then began reading it.
  他掸掉书上的尘土，开始读了起来。
• Every morning after washing the pot and bowls she began to dust down the furniture.
  每天早晨在刷完锅碗之后她就开始打扫家具上的灰尘。
• He was coated in cement and sand, we picked him up and dusted him down .
  他滚了一身的水泥和沙子，我们把他拉了起来，掸干净身上的泥沙。
