区别辨析 switch off/out, be off/out, blow out, go off/out, let out, put off/out, shut off, snap off, snuff out 与 turn off/out

(1) ① switch off/out意思是“使(电器)停止工作;关上(电器)”。

  • A: Why did you switch off the radio?

  • Please switch off all lights as you leave the room, to save electricity.

②be out用于灯或火时,可表示“灭了,熄了”。

  • The fire was out before the firemen arrived.

(3) blow out可用于灯、火,表示“吹灭;(被)刮灭”,可有及物和不及物用法。

  • Jane blew the candle out .
    简吹灭了蜡烛。
  • The flame blew out .
    火焰被刮灭了。

(4) ①go off也可用于灯、火,意为“熄灭;被关掉”;用于煤气、电等,表示“不供应;断(气、电)了”。

  • The power went off in several parts of the city during the high wind.
    大风中,城市的好几处地方都断电了。
  • The light went off as the policemen entered the room.
    当警察进屋时灯熄灭了。
  • You can't light the gas — it's gone off again.

②go out可用于灯、火,意为“熄灭”。

(5) let out可表示“让(火)熄灭”,等于let...go out。

(6) ①put off可表示“关掉(灯、电机等)”,英式英语中用得尤多。

(7) shut off用于机器或开关时,表示“(使)停止工作;关掉”。

  • Do please shut off that terrible music!
    请一定把那可怕的音乐关掉!
  • The machine shuts off by itself at the end of recording.
    录音结束时,机器会自动关上。

(8) ①snap off可作“突然关掉(灯)”解。

  • Suddenly the light was snapped off and no one could see the murderer escape.
    灯突然灭了,没人能看到凶手逃跑。

②还可作“(使)咔嚓一下断下来”解,可有及物和不及物用法。

  • The branch snapped off under the weight of the snow.

(9) snuff out可表示“熄灭(蜡烛)”。

  • Snuff out the candles. It's time to go to bed.

(10) ①turn off可表示“(用旋钮)关掉水、煤气、电等”,可有及物和不及物用法。

  • The tap won't turn off , and there's water all over the floor.
