区别辨析 sympathize/-ise, feel for, understand, commiserate, condole, console 与 solace

(1) ①sympathize/-ise可表示“同情,安慰”,为不及物动词,常与with连用。

  • Mary was crying and her friend Lily was sympathizing with her.
    玛丽在哭,她的朋友莉莉正安慰她。
  • We all sympathized with him over the death of his wife.
    我们对他妻子的过世都深表同情。

②sympathize还作“赞同”解,常与with连用。

  • Do your parents sympathize with your desire to be an actor?
    你父母赞成你当演员的愿望吗?
  • We thoroughly sympathize with the government's efforts for reform in the field of economy.
    我们完全赞同政府为经济领域的改革做出的努力。

 (2) feel for用于非正式场合,意为“同情”,在此意义上等于sympathize with。

  • I really felt for her when she lost her husband in that accident.
    她在那次事故中失去了丈夫,我对她非常同情。

 (3) understand意为“理解,了解,体谅”,指考虑别人的困难并给予同情。

  • I think he understands what you feel.
    我想他理解你的感受。
  • understand your feelings perfectly.
    我非常体谅你的感触。

 (4) commiserate意为“怜悯,同情”,可作及物动词。

  • The whole village commiserated with the farmer's family in their sorrow.
    全村人都对那家农民的不幸深表同情。
  • The teacher commiserated (with) the student on his failure.
    那学生未考及格老师对他很同情。

 (5) condole意为“吊唁,哀悼,同情,慰问”,是不及物动词,与with连用,其后接人。

  • Jim wrote to condole with his friend on/over the death of his mother.
    吉姆写信给他的朋友,对他母亲的去世表示慰问。
  • His friends gathered to condole with him over his loss.
    朋友们都来了,对他的损失表示同情和安慰。

 (6) ①console意思是“安慰”。

  • She was consoled to think that she at least had an understanding husband to turn to.
    她想到至少她还有个善解人意的丈夫可以依靠时,就感到欣慰。
  • They all tried to console the murdered man's wife.
    他们都竭力安慰被谋杀者的妻子。

②console oneself (with)意思是“聊以自慰;以……自慰”。

  • After fire destroyed his home, he consoled himself with the thought that it might have been worse.
    在他的家被大火烧毁了之后,他自我安慰,心想事情本来可能会更糟糕呢。

 (7) solace意为“给予安慰”,是较正式的用法。

  • Hard work helped to solace her grief.
    努力工作帮她减轻了悲伤。
