(1) ①think about/of可作“思考,想,回想,为……着想”解。
- I shall be thinking about/of you all the time.
我会一直想着你。 - I have my family to think about/of , so I must find the best job that I can.
我得为家庭着想,尽我所能地找份最好的工作。 - Do you think about/of whether anyone would be hurt by your action?
你有没有想过你的行为是否会伤害到其他人? - Are you still thinking of going abroad to continue your studies?
你仍然想去国外深造? - I was thinking particularly of/about the children when I chose the house.
我选择这座房子主要是为孩子们考虑。
②think of还可表示“想起,想出”,也可用think out。
- Can you think of a suitable reply to give them?
你能想出如何给他们一个合适的答复吗? - I can't think of his name for the moment.
我一时想不起他的名字了。
③think about/of还可表示“对……的看法”。
- What do you think about/of the new Japanese cabinet?
你对日本新内阁有何看法? - I don't know what to think about/of the new chairman; he is utterly a mystery to me.
我不知如何看待这位新主席,对于我他绝对是个谜一样的人物。 - I know your boss thinks highly/a great deal/a lot of your work.
我知道老板对你的工作评价很高。
④think to也可表示“对……看法如何”。
- What do you think to this musical group?
你认为这个乐团怎么样?
(2) think on/upon可作“思索,考虑”解,是比较陈旧的用法。
- We should think more on/upon moral matters than we do.
我们应该对道德问题再多一些思考。
(3) brood about/on/upon/over意为“(对……)冥思苦想、沉思”,指长时间的、通常是不必要的思考。
- Just as physicists worry about the nature of matter, historians brood about the study of man's past.
就像物理学家对物质的性质操心一样,历史学家往往沉溺于对人类过去的思考。 - Why brood over the lost opportunities?
你为何老想着那些失去了的机会? - It's no good brooding on how it happened; the thing to do is (to) put it right.
总是考虑事情是怎么发生的根本于事无补;当务之急是设法改正。
(4) dwell on/upon可作“(对……)沉思、细想”解,常指过多地想令人烦恼的事。
- He sat for a moment in thought, dwelling on the matters that had been raised in the committee meeting.
他坐在那里思考委员会会议中提到的问题。 - Why dwell/brood on how it happened? The thing to do is to get rid of the low spirits first.
为何老想着事情如何发生的?当务之急是振作士气。
(5) linger on可作“怀念,思念,想念”解,指长时间地想,所想的多是令人愉快之事。
- He lingered on the thought of his old friends.
他怀念着老朋友。
(6) meditate on意为“认真思考,沉思”。
- Thinking men have long meditated on the meaning of life.
爱思考的人总是长时间地思索人生的意义。 - He sat there meditating on his misfortunes.
他坐在那里,沉思默想着自己的不幸遭遇。
(7) mull over/about为美式口语,意为“仔细考虑,深思熟虑”。
- The committee have mulled over/about your suggestion but have decided not to accept it because of the cost.
委员会已仔细考虑过你的建议,但因为成本的原因而决定不予采纳。 - I haven't made up my mind as to what to do next; I'm still mulling it over/mulling over it.
我还没下定决心下一步做什么,还在仔细考虑中。
(8) muse on/upon/over意为“冥想,沉思,沉湎于”。
- It is useless musing/to muse on/upon/over past misfortunes.
一味沉湎于过去的不幸毫无用处。 - She sat musing for hours on her days in Africa.
她坐在那里一连几个小时地沉湎于那些在非洲的日子。
(9) pause on/upon意为“仔细考虑”。
- Let me pause on these matters for a time before I make decision.
在做出决定前容我仔细考虑考虑这些问题。
(10) ponder on/upon/over意为“思考,思索,深刻考虑”。
- With great seriousness he pondered on/upon/over the problem.
他很认真地考虑了这个问题。 - The director is still pondering over the wisdom of accepting the contract, and will give his decision tomorrow.
主任还在思考着接受合同是否明智,明天将会给出决定。
(11) pore on/upon/over也可作“冥想,深入思考”解,与ponder on/upon/over接近。
- After poring over/upon/on the matter for some days, he was able to reach a decision.
经过几天的深思熟虑,他做出了决定。
