George Washington
George Washington (1732-1799) was the commander-in-chief of the Continental army in the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783) and the first president of the United States. Born into a Virginia planter family, Washington had little or no formal schooling, but he read in geography, military, history, agriculture and learned the morals, manners, and body of knowledge requisite for an 18th century Virginia gentleman. He once joined the Seven Years' War and became Lieutenant Colonel and Captain. The Continental Congress appointed Washington commander-in-chief of the American revolutionary forces in 1775. He presided over the Philadelphia Convention that drafted the United States Constitution in 1787 and became the first President of the U.S. in 1789.
He pursued two intertwined interests: military arts and western expansion. He symbolized qualities of discipline, aristocratic duty, military orthodoxy, and persistence in adversity that his contemporaries particularly valued as marks of mature political leadership. Washington retired at the end of his second term. In his Farewell Address, he urged his countrymen to forswear excessive party spirit and geographical distinctions. In foreign affairs, he warned against long-term alliances. Washington enjoyed less than three years of retirement at Mount Vernon, for he died of a throat infection December 14, 1799. For months the Nation mourned him. For his central role in the formation of the United States, he is often referred to as the “Father of the United States”.
