It has been adapted for the screen several times.
Sons and Lovers is about the weakness of human relationships. Because of discrepancies in social status of Paul's parents, the couple had suffered a series of misfortune after they had got married. Thus the mother deposited her hopes on her son Paul, and Paul was growing up under such an odd feeling condition. As he grew up, Paul realized that as long as his mother was alive, there could be no other woman entering his world and his mother would never allow such things. At the end of the novel, Paul was relieved after the miserable death of his mother.
Lawrence rewrote the work four times until he was happy with it. Although before publication, the work was usually titled Paul Morel , Lawrence finally settled on Sons and Lovers. Just as the new title makes the work less focused on a central character, many of the later additions broadened the scope of the work, thereby making the work less autobiographical.
