Tartuffe , or The Impostor, or The Hypocrite , is one of the most famous theatrical comedies by Molière. The characters of Tartuffe, Elmire, and Valère are considered among the greatest classical theatre roles. It is a comedy about a pious fraud called Tartuffe tricked into the businessman Orgon's house, plotted to seduce his wife Elmire and looted the family's treasure and property but finally got exposed to the truth and ended up in prison.
《答尔丢夫》，又名《伪君子》或《伪善者》，是莫里哀最著名的喜剧之一。剧中的答尔丢夫、爱米尔和瓦莱尔都是最经典的戏剧人物。故事讲述了这样一个故事：一个伪装圣洁的教会骗子答尔丢夫混进商人奥尔恭家，图谋勾引其妻子爱米尔并夺取其家财，最后真相败露，锒铛入狱。

Tartuffe is the center of the drama. Of an avaricious, sly and bloodless nature, he is a degenerate rogue from an unknown reduced aristocracy. He wears a good-man mask and claims himself as a pious, ascetic believer with his sole heart tuning to no worldly attachments but only God. In fact, he is everything of hypocrisy and corruption in the church and aristocracy. Orgon is an opinionated father with a stubborn head and a brutal heart. Easily trapped in Tartuffe's pious lies, he is blinded in superstitious ideas and in his worship of a gilt “saint”. It is his stupidity that ushers in the impostor and his narrow-mindedness that almost destroys the whole family. Despite his last-moment recognition and regret, the Orgon's would have crumpled into tragedy if the wise sovereignty failed to show his face and strength.
