A Doll's House
玩偶之家

A Doll's House is a three-act play in prose by Henrik Ibsen. It premiered at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1879. A Doll's House was based on the life of Laura Kieler, a good friend of Ibsen. Much that happened between Nora and Torvald Helmer happened to Laura and her husband, Victor.
《玩偶之家》是亨里克·易卜生创作的三幕戏剧,1879年在丹麦哥本哈根的皇家剧院首次公演。《玩偶之家》是根据易卜生的好友劳拉·基勒的亲身经历改编。戏剧中发生在娜拉和托伐·海尔茂之间的多数情节真实发生在劳拉和丈夫维克多之间。

The play is significant for its critical attitude toward 19th century marriage norms. It aroused great controversy at the time, as it concludes with the protagonist, Nora, leaving her husband and children because she wants to discover herself. Ibsen was inspired by the belief that “a woman cannot be herself in modern society,” since it is “an exclusively male society, with laws made by men and with prosecutors and judges who assess feminine conduct from a masculine standpoint.”
该剧批判了19世纪的婚姻观念。剧末主人公娜拉为了想要寻找自我,离开了丈夫和孩子,这在当时引发了巨大的争议。易卜生认为,“一个女人无法在现代社会中做自己”,因为“在这个男性主导一切的社会,法律是由男人制定的,检察官和法官也从男性的立场评估女性的行为”。

A Doll's House stands out as a typical “problem drama ” at that time. It focuses on discussion of women's role in the family. When Torvald calls Nora his “little squirrel”, Nora with her audience will get stunned by the later development when her affection-filled husband cursed her with any possible hurtful words. “We must come to a final settlement, Torvald. During eight whole years...we have never exchanged one serious word about serious things.” says Nora to her husband in the play, which symbolizes perfectly that women play no important role in the 19th century family life.
