Der Freischütz
Der Freischütz is a German opera with spoken dialogue in three acts by Carl Maria von Weber with a libretto by his friend Friedrich Kind. It premiered and succeeded on 18 June 1821 at the Schauspielhaus Berlin. It is considered the first important German Romantic opera, especially in its national identity and stark emotionality. The plot is based on the German folk legend of the Freischütz and many of its tunes were thought to be inspired by German folk music, but this is a common misconception.
The story line of the opera centers on a young hunter called Max. He has to win a shooting competition to marry his lover Agathe. Having lost the first round, he could not afford for a second failure, which drove him into depression. Seeing this opportunity, Kaspar, a notorious hunter, who has sold his soul to demon and been in desperate search for a substitute, plots at attaining Marx's body. Thus, Marx was pitifully tricked into the Wolf's Glen in search of a never-miss-a-target bullet. When the day of final contest arrives, Marx's gun is aiming at a little dove barely leaving the flowery shrubs, which turns out to be his lover under spell. The gun shots and the dove falls down — that is when magic befalls. The wise and fair hermit magically turns Marx's muzzle to the tree where Kaspar is hiding. So the wicked Kaspar is punished by death and Max as well as his love is rescued.
