Three Days to See
Three Days to See is an essay written by Helen Keller, an indignant writer who is opposed to individuals with the gift of sight and refuses to see or is unaware of the beauty that surrounds them. In it she wrote about how she would appreciate just three days of sight. Keller makes very relevant points in her essay on how those with the capability to see are not taking full advantage of their gift of sight.
Helen writes down so many inspiring maxims about how to live a life with a movable and appreciative heart. She claims that it would be an excellent rule to live each day as if we should die tomorrow, because in this extreme way will human beings see clearly the value of life. It pains Helen to see people usually take life for granted. Days stretch out in an endless vista, only numbing people before its beauty and value. Helen imagines with passion, “If I can get so much pleasure from mere touch, how much more beauty must be revealed by sight.”
“Oh, the things that I should see if I had the power of sight for three days!” As Helen sighs in vain in the end, this essay sounds so powerful yet subtle and should resonate with anyone who can't find beauty in their life. If someone so disabled like Helen can appreciate life without seeing it, then life must be more than beautiful and marvelous than we've ever assumed.
