Albert Einstein, a German-born theoretical physicist and philosopher of science, is considered the greatest scientist of the 20th century. His discoveries and theories have greatly influenced science in many fields. He developed the general theory of relativity, one of the two pillars of modern physics (alongside quantum mechanics). He is best known in popular culture for his mass-energy equivalence formula E = mc2 (which has been dubbed “the world's most famous equation”). He received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his services to theoretical physics and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect”. The latter was pivotal in establishing quantum theory.

Einstein was born in 1879 in Ulm, a city in Germany. As a boy, he was slow to learn to talk, but in his childhood he showed great curiosity about nature and ability to solve difficult mathematical problems. In 1905, Einstein began to publish a series of papers which shook the whole scientific and intellectual world, and for the theories he established in the papers he won the Nobel Prize for Physics. Because Einstein was Jewish, when Hitler took over Germany in 1933, he had to leave the country and finally settled in the United States. There he continued his study on the structure of the universe until his death in 1955.
